Last night, NWCSC was proud to host our Data and Machine Learning in the Cyber Domain event at DiSH Manchester, sponsored by CACI. The event brought together professionals from the cyber security, data, and technology sectors to explore how machine learning and artificial intelligence are transforming the way we address today’s cyber challenges.
With a diverse line-up of expert speakers and engaging discussions, the evening offered attendees a chance to learn, network, and gain valuable insights into cutting-edge applications of machine learning in cyber security.
Networking over Pies
Attendees enjoyed delicious pies from HM Pasties, drinks, and an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals in a relaxed setting. DiSH Manchester’s collaborative atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for conversations that would spark ideas and connections throughout the night.
Unpacking Machine Learning in Cyber
The first presentation of the evening came from Jonathan Whiteley, Senior Technical Consultant at CACI, who provided an insightful overview of machine learning in the cyber domain. Jonathan shared real-world examples of how CACI has applied machine learning solutions to tackle complex cyber challenges, from anomaly detection to threat prediction.
LAVA Project: Tackling Big Data with Machine Learning
Next, attendees were introduced to CACI’s innovative LAVA (Log Anomaly Visualisation and Analysis) Project by Dougal Houston, Full-Stack Software Engineer. Dougal explained the driving force behind LAVA: addressing the challenges organisations face when managing and analysing overwhelming inflows of data.
Dougal showcased how LAVA is revolutionising data analysis, making it possible for organisations to go beyond reactive strategies and take proactive steps in improving their cyber security posture.
AI Security: Ghost in the RAG
The final talk of the evening came from Dr Thomas Win, Associate Head of School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Sunderland, who captivated the audience with his presentation, AI Security: Ghost in the RAG.
Thomas explored some of the darker sides of artificial intelligence, delving into AI attack type. His thought-provoking insights into “Who’s watching the watcher?” raised important questions about ensuring the security of AI systems themselves, particularly as they become more integrated into cyber defences.
Key Takeaways
The Data and Machine Learning in the Cyber Domain event was a powerful exploration of the intersection between data science, machine learning, and cyber security. Key themes emerged from the evening:
- Machine Learning’s Transformative Potential: From anomaly detection to visualising actionable opportunities, machine learning offers organisations new ways to navigate complex data and identify threats proactively.
- The Importance of Innovation: Projects like LAVA highlight how the cyber sector can leverage cutting-edge technologies to solve real-world challenges and improve resilience.
- Securing AI Systems: Thomas’s presentation underlined the need to ensure AI systems are not only effective but also secure against emerging threats.
